A common woodworking theme is “no scrap left behind”, which I tried to embody in this piece. Offcuts of black walnut and spalted hackberry were set in clear epoxy resin and turned to make the dish that you see here.

This is my first larger scale piece with epoxy, and you can see several places where I learned more about the porosity of wood as those places get off quite a bit of bubbling while the epoxy cured. It’s an unusual effect, and I’ll claim that it was intentional if you ask me.

The inset of the mortise has a spiraling effect which is visible through the clear epoxy.

While it would be an excellent catch-all dish, it’s also the perfect size and shape to be used as a modern wine coaster.
