This shallow walnut bowl has an interesting design feature on one side.

As it was being turned, it became more apparent that the sap wood had been nibbled on my beetles. Instead of turning it all away, I left the trails and holes left behind by nature. Now, as the wood flows from the darker heartwood to the lighter sapwood, the bore holes from the beetles becomes more apparent and even highlighted in the lighter wood. The very outside edge was at the bark line.

I greatly enjoyed clearing out the holes to find just how many went all the way through. It’s a design that I would not have been able to recreate manually.

Finished with Odie’s Oil, a mixture of tung oil, orange oil, and waxes, it is food safe and ready to go.
