Live oak is a wonderful tree, and often has some interesting texture just underneath the bark. This piece had that great texture, and I wanted to show it off some by turning a live edge. I think that the lower edges of the rim show off the grain nicely, and that texture flows into the top potion of the rim. That’s not tear-out, it’s still part of the tree’s natural texture!

I’ve finished the piece with Tung Oil, which gives the wood a slightly darker tone. It also helps to waterproof it and is food safe.
