The bowl is made out of a spalted wood which was cut down due to a road expansion. Initial thoughts were that this was an ash, however, as I am not 100% sure, I’ve left the designation blank on the base. Whatever the wood type, the spalting is pretty, and has been accentuated by the addition of a colored epoxy.
I enjoyed experimenting with this bowl as it has a few distinct features. One is the raised rim on the outside. It’s a subtle design accent to add a little extra to the side view. As I was turning this one, the beetle bore holes became more and more apparent, so I cleaned them all out and filled them with a reddish pearlescent epoxy. Of course, I got messy, so you’ll find other bits of the epoxy in little areas around the bowl; have fun with the hunt!
